Jefferson was in Paris at the time of the imprisonment of the Cardinal de Rohan for his connection with the affair of the
Diamond Necklace and several times mentioned it in his correspondence. For an account of this, and Jefferson’s pamphlets on
the subject, see chapter 23.
Jeanne de Saint Remy de Valois, Comtesse de la Motte, 1756-1791, French adventuress. The first edition of this work which contains her version of the affair
of the Diamond Necklace, was printed in London in 1791, and, according to Tourneux, was bought up by de Laporte, intendant
de la Liste civile, and burnt on the 26 May, 1792, with the exception of one copy which escaped destruction.
