to George Alexander Otis written from Monticello on December 25, 1820, Jefferson stated: “

Maximilien de Béthune, Duc de Sully, 1559-1641, French statesman. His memoirs, which are valuable source material for the history of the period, were originally
published in 1638. The first edition of the adaptation by l’Ecluse was issued in 1747. Two supplementary volumes were added
to the edition of 1778, not in the Jefferson collection.
