Sebastião José de Carvalho e Mello, Marquez de Pombal, 1699-1782, Portuguese statesman, who from 1750 to 1770 during the reign of King Joseph, exercised the powers of a dictator in Portugal. This is the second edition of the Anecdotes which were first published in Warsaw in 1783. A portion of the work relates to Brasil and to the expulsion of the Jesuits.
