James McClurg, 1746-1823, a native of Virginia, studied medicine in Edinburgh, Paris, and London, where this book was published before his return to Virginia in 1773. He was appointed to the first chair of Anatomy and Medicine at William and Mary in 1779, and in 1821 became the first president of the Medical Society of Virginia.
