A copy of this book was included in the library Jefferson bought from the Rev. Samuel Henry on March 3, 1785. It was sold to Congress in 1815, but was either missing at the time of the sale or was lost immediately afterwards. The book is not checked in an early working copy of the 1815 catalogue, and is the first entry in an undated manuscript list headed Congress Library Books missing, made between 1815 and 1830. The entry is omitted from all the Library Catalogues after that of 1815.
Samuel Henley, 1740-1815, was professor of moral philosophy at the College of William and Mary. He returned to England on the outbreak of the War of American Independence, where he followed a scholastic and literary career. Jefferson bought a number of books from his library, for which see the Index.
