This work is on most of Jefferson’s lists of recommended historical reading.
The first two volumes are a collection of histories by the authors listed by Jefferson above, edited by John Hughes for the booksellers whose names appear in the imprint. The notes in these two volumes signed J.S. are ascribed to Strype. The third volume, by White Kennett, was published anonymously. The long list of subscribers in the first volume contains many well known names including that
of Narcissus Luttrell, the bibliographer, and Michael Johnson, bookseller in Litchfield, the father of Samuel Johnson.
White Kennett, 1660-1728, bishop of Peterborough.
