Jacques Spon, 1647-1685, French doctor,
archaeologist and antiquary, is famous as a pioneer in the exploration of the
monuments of antiquity. His first edition of his account of his archaeological
travels with Sir George Wheler was published in 1677.

George Sandys, 1578-1644, English poet, left England in 1610 for a foreign tour, and published the account of his travels in 1615, dedicated
to Prince Charles. The work was reprinted a number of times, and portions included by Purchas in his
Pilgrims
, and by John Harris in his
Navigantium et Itinerantium Bibliotheca
. Sandys was one of the undertakers named in the third Virginia charter of 1611, and in 1621 was appointed treasurer of the
Virginia Company. He owned a plantation in Virginia, but eventually returned to England.
