Sir Francis Bacon, Viscount St. Albans, 1561-1626, Lord Chancellor of England. The original edition of the Essayes was published in 1597, and contained ten essays only. The first edition in this form, with fifty-eight essays, appeared in 1625. Thomas Palmer’s edition is usually dated 1664; the Imprimatur is dated June 6, 1663.
