Originally bound for Jefferson in calf, gilt by March, on April 26, 1806. Rebound in calf (the original green silk bookmark
preserved), marbled endpapers; the Library of Congress 1815 bookplate preserved. Initialled by Jefferson at sig. I and T.
The cost of the original binding was $1.00.
Only one copy was sold to Congress by Jefferson; the other was sold at the auction of Jefferson’s books in 1829.
This book was written at the request of Governor Claiborne, whose letter to Kerr, dated August 12, 1805, and Kerr’s answer
announcing the completion of the work, dated January 1, 1806, are printed at the beginning of the book. A copy was sent to
Jefferson by the Governor, William C. C. Claiborne, who wrote from New Orleans on March 1, 1806: “I beg you to receive--accompanied with my warm respects--a Treatise written on the Criminal Laws of this Territory.”
Louis Casimir Elisabeth Moreau de Lislet, 1767-1832, Louisiana jurist and politician, was one of the lawyers in the Batture case, q.v., in chapter 24. This is the
first edition of the French text. The English text was published in the same year by John Mowry.
