In his previously quoted letter to Peter Carr, dated from Philadelphia, May 8, 1791, Jefferson observed: “ . . . your judgment of L d. Holt is certainly right. he is the greatest lawyer England ever had, except Coke . . .

Sir John Holt, 1642-1710. One of his more interesting decisions, that concerning a negro slave sold in Virginia, will be found on page 495 of this edition. The sale was alleged to have taken place in the parish of the Blessed Mary of the Arches in the ward of Cheap, and Holt dismissed the action on the ground that as soon as a negro arrived in England he was free.
This work is said to have been edited by Giles Jacob, other works by whom are in this collection.
