Sir John Dalrymple, fourth baronet of Cranstoun, 1726-1810, Scottish advocate. The first edition of this work, which is dedicated to the Honourable Henry Home of Kaims, was published in 1757. Dalrymple was the author of several books and also experimented in chemistry, discovering the art of making soap from herrings.
