Elizabeth Chudleigh, Countess of Bristol, 1720-1788, was accused of having made a bigamous marriage with the Duke of Kingston. Her life story is said to have suggested to Thackeray the character of Beatrice in Esmond and of the Baroness Bernstein in The Virginians .
