The gift of Robert Patterson, who wrote to Jefferson from Philadelphia on November 11, 1811: “Presuming that you may not as yet have seen a little tract, by Doctor Buchanan, on “Christian Researches in Asia”, lately
republished in Boston; and not doubting that you would find it highly interesting, I have taken the liberty of sending you
a copy, of which I most respectfully request your acceptance . . .”
Claudius Buchanan, 1766-1815, Church of England clergyman, was a native of Cambuslang near Glasgow. In 1796 he was appointed to a chaplaincy
in Bengal, and in 1799 became vice-provost of the college of Fort William.
