Charles Henry Wharton, 1748-1833, a native of Maryland, was born a Roman Catholic, and educated at the English Jesuits’ College at St. Omer’s.
He left the Roman Church while chaplain to the Roman Catholics in Worcester, England, and eventually became a protestant Episcopal
clergyman. He returned to America in 1783. He was a friend of William Smith, and worked with him on the church liturgy.
