George Berkeley, 1685-1753, English philosopher, Bishop of Cloyne. This work was written whilst Berkeley was on a visit to America in connection
with his scheme for founding a college in Bermuda. On his return to England he made over his American home, White-hall, to
found scholarships at Yale.
