Étienne Claviere, 17335-1794, French financier, was a Genevan by birth. He came to Jefferson’s notice in 1787 on his offering to buy the American debt to France, described by Jefferson in a letter to Samuel Osgood written from Paris on January 5, 1787. Claviere was a friend of Brissot de Warville, with whom he collaborated in various enterprises, including the foundation of the Société des Amis des Noirs. A number of the works of both appear in this catalogue.
Simon Nicholas Henri Linguet, 1736-1794. He and Claviere both died in the same year. Linguet was guillotined and Claviere committed suicide.
