John Dalrymple, Fifth Earl of Stair, d. 1789, “the Cassandra of the nation”, a member of the faculty of advocates, and one of the representative peers in Parliament,
was the author of several pessimistic tracts on the financial position of England at the close of the American war. His gloomy
apprehensions were refuted by Sir John Sinclair.
