Henry Saint-John, Viscount Bolingbroke, 1678-1751. The first number of The Craftsman appeared on December 5, 1726, after the rupture between Walpole and William Pulteney, Earl of Bath, who then formed an alliance with Bolingbroke. The name Caleb D’Anvers Esq was purely imaginary, and the Craftsman was edited by Nicholas Amhurst, with Pulteney and Bolingbroke its chief contributors. W. Raleigh is supposed to be one of the pseudonyms of Bolingbroke.
