This first listing for this set would seem to reference 6 volumes and then the remaining five listings detail the other six volumes. The evidence on their presence by 1783 is conflicting. The first entry is not clear as to the presence of a period with the checkmark. The five remaining entries originally had a check mark and a period, that were subsequently erased. The dating of the diagonal crossout is inconclusive, but it extends through all but the third entry. Yet, at one time it also extended through that third entry, but was erased and a new check mark was written over the old check mark. Interestingly, Sowerby atypically, as she very rarely includes any entry that was crossed out or erased, includes the fourth entry. This indicates that this one volume was present when she searched the holdings of the Library of Congress and as she notes it was referenced in the 1815 Library of Congress Catalogue. Yet, none of the other volumes were referenced in that Catalogue. Likewise, the Trist MS only lists the fourth entry (10 th volume Lucas). All things considered, TJ may have only had one volume by the time he sold his books to Congress, but the evidence indicates that as of 1783 he had the complete set of twelve volumes.]
